Chapter Forty-One

Robin

She stood with Billy out in the parking lot, both of them bleary-eyed, running on five pots of coffee and squinting in the bright glare of the sunshine, and she couldn't resist saying the mom-est thing of them all: “You sure you got it?”

Billy was hanging with Johnnie and Clay, in front of the car. “I got it,” he said, but either tiredness or something else had leached the usual snottiness out of it.

“You're sure?”

He didn't blow up at her, which was a surprise in and of itself. “I got it, Robin,” he said, then, lower, “it's a good plan.”

“Oh.” That came as a surprise to her. “Well...glad you like it.”

“We'll get it taken care of,” Billy said, popping the door handle and climbing in. “You just keep nailed to the TV.” He grinned wolfishly. “You'll see us on it soon enough.” And he slammed the door, Johnnie started it up, and they took off in a squeal of tires.

“Why doesn't that instill me with confidence?” Robin asked, watching them disappear down the street and out of sight. Oh, well. It was out of her hands now.
